The path down to the bird hide is now accessible and a new sign post has been erected directing the public down the steps to the entrance of the hide. There is a book for sightings tucked on the shelf and visitors are welcome to add any wildlife, birds, mamamals, flowers etc: which they spot while at the bird hide or while passing through the wetland. It is a very tranquil and beautiful spot to while away some minutes of the day.

On Sunday the 24th of January, all the boxes on the Quakers Hole site were emptied and their contents recorded. It has been very interesting to note that over the 5 years that the boxes have been in position, 2009 had the poorest year for occupation of the boxes. Out of the ten boxes only 3 had complete nests, one had the start of a nest and the others were completely empty. This compares greatly with all other years when only 2 of the boxes were unoccupied. To see the complete findings visit the bird hide on the Quakers Hole site.

At last the steps down to the bird hide are gradually taking shape, after a days work on Saturday 25th of April. Thank you to the British Conservation Trust for volunteers (BCTV) who gave the guidance and expertise, and to those who gave their muscle, Paul from Sunderland, Chris from Acomb, Mark and Sebastian from Slaley, and Rachael and the Porter Family from Whitley Chapel. There is still a bit of work to do which will be completed by the BCTV with a youth group of volunteers, and some help from the students at Dilston College. Access to the hide will then be complete. A new gate will be erected on the track side in the near future. This part of the work has been funded by a grant from SITA Green Prints which was awarded to Dilston College.
