About the parish hall

Situated in the hamlet of Whitley Chapel, six miles south of the market town of Hexham, the parish hall is one of a triad of social gathering points, along with the school and church, for the residents of the widespread rural community of Hexhamshire.

From its humble beginnings as a wooden hut the present day hall provides excellent facilities, which are continually improving, for a diverse range of user groups of all ages from Mothers & Toddlers and Young Farmers to the Womens Institute and Bowls Club. The Hall is also well used by private individuals for birthday parties, weddings and other family events.

The hall is a registered charity whose day to day management is carried out by a group of trustees appointed either by one of the various user groups or the community in general. The Trustees meet six times a year on a Monday evening to discuss day to day running of the hall, financial matters and to organise various fund raising events.

Finances for the hall come from various sources which include hire charges for groups and private individuals. These hire charges and a £1000.00 grant from the Parish Council cover the everyday running expenses of the hall such as heating and lighting, cleaning, insurance and day to day maintenance costs. For major refurbishment work and large capital purchases the hall relies on the profit from social events such as the popular Burns Night and grants from various outside organisations.

The Hall is currently working towards meeting all government legislation for best practice and hopes to be compliant in all facets of this by the end of the year. As a sign of our progress the hall has recently been awarded Level 1 Hall-Mark status which is a quality standard scheme for village/parish halls. This is a national scheme organised by ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural England). Whitley Chapel is the first hall in our region to achieve this level of excellence.
